Development of bifunctional chelating fibers with high performance in metal ion adsorption kinetics

Jo, Akinori*; Shibata, Yoshikazu*; Tamada, Masao; Seko, Noriaki; Katakai, Akio

JAEA-Review 2006-042, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2005, P. 43, 2007/02

Adsorbent fiber of bifunctional chelating was synthesized by grafting of the precursor of aminomethylphosphpnate and sulfonate onto polyethylene fiber. Breakthrough curve showed the same characterisctics in the space velocity from 50 to 1000 h$$^{-1}$$ when 0.01 M Zn solution was pumped into the column of the synthesized fiber adsorbent. In thease cases, the adsorption capacities of Zn were 0.72-0.85 mmol/g-ad. The adsorped Zn could be eluted quantitaively by 1 M HCl solution.

Improvement of gasochromic properties in tungsten oxide by ion irradiation

Takano, Katsuyoshi; Inoue, Aichi; Yamamoto, Shunya; Yoshikawa, Masahito

JAEA-Review 2006-042, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2005, P. 160, 2007/02

Gasochromic properties for hydrogen gas on tungsten oxide thin films have been investigated for an optical hydrogen gas sensors. The gasochromic properties are considered to relate to oxygen vacancies or defects in the tungsten oxide. In this study, it is tried to make oxygen vacancies or defects in the tungsten oxide thin films by ion beam irradiation, to investigate the relation between the amount of fluency and the gasochromic properties. The coloration for 1 % hydrogen was measured by time resolved optical spectroscopy with 630 nm light. The coloration is enhanced with the increasing the fluence, over $$1times10^{14}$$ ions/cm$$^2$$.

Measurement of structure and charge states of swift carbon cluster passing through a thin foil

Chiba, Atsuya; Saito, Yuichi; Narumi, Kazumasa; Adachi, Masahiro; Kaneko, Toshiaki*

JAEA-Review 2006-042, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2005, P. 176, 2007/02

The charge states were measured for the constituent ions of 1 MeV/atom C$$_{3}$$$$^{+}$$ ions passing through a carbon thin foil. The constituent ions of C$$_{3}$$$$^{+}$$ ions deflected by the deflection plates were detected with a luminance plate position detector monitored by a CCD camera. Since the detected ion signals contain the information of charge states and cluster structure, this measurement method enabled us to investigate the structure-dependent of the average charges in the cluster ions. The data clearly show that the measured average charges of C$$_{3}$$$$^{+}$$ ions in a linear-chain structure are larger than those in a ring structure. Moreover we found that the edge-position ions in a linear structure have the average charges larger than the middle-position ion. These experimental results are well supported by a recent theory on the cluster average charge.

Detection of oxidative DNA damage using Anti-8-OHdG Antibody; A Useful method to distinguish irradiated foods

Kikuchi, Masahiro; Mohd Dzomir, A. Z.; Gunawardane, C. R.; Alam, M. K.; Kobayashi, Yasuhiko

JAEA-Review 2006-042, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2005, P. 72, 2007/02

Ionizing radiation has been used for reducing food losses and securing food safety. The development of versatile detection methods of irradiated foods is needed for appropriate management. In an effort to distinguish between irradiated and non-irradiated meats, a detection method of oxidative DNA base damages using chemiluminescence enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with anti-8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine antibody was developed. The procedure of this method is not so complicated, and relatively short time is needed to obtain results without special techniques. For most of all foods containing DNA, this novel method should be applicable to detect the damaged DNA of irradiated foods. Application to beef meat irradiated with 3 kGy or higher was suggested to be detectable successfully.

Operation of the electrostatic accelerators

Mizuhashi, Kiyoshi; Uno, Sadanori; Okoshi, Kiyonori; Chiba, Atsuya; Yamada, Keisuke; Saito, Yuichi; Ishii, Yasuyuki; Sato, Takahiro; Sakai, Takuro; Yokota, Wataru; et al.

JAEA-Review 2006-042, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2005, P. 197, 2007/02

Three electrostatic accelerators were almost operated smoothly for various experiments in FY 2005. The yearly operation time of each accelerator amounts to 1974, 2359.9, 1859.9 hour for the tandem, the single-ended and the ion implanter, respectively. Main trouble was a short circuit of a part of the ion source in the single-ended accelerator. This lets to the suspension of operation for fifteen days. As features in FY 2005, the generation of the power cut by thunderbolts and large earthquakes were abounding. By this natural force, the Turbo-molecular pump was broken, experiment was interrupted and then the inspection of accelerator facility was carried out every time. New beam acceleration and improvement of each accelerator were carried out.

Easy measurement technique for 2D distribution of fluence using GAF-film and PC-scanner

Agematsu, Takashi; Hanaya, Hiroaki

JAEA-Review 2006-042, JAEA Takasaki Annual Report 2005, P. 183, 2007/02

We developed an easy measurement technique for 2D-distribution of relative ion beam fluence using GAF-chromic film and an image scanner for a personal computer. The thin active layer type GAF-film, HD-810, is usable for heavy ion beams with short range. We obtained dose response curves of the film irradiated by 2 MeV electron beam measuring with three color components of different model scanners. Each curve has a linear region from zero to some hundreds of Gy, depending on the model and the color, which is available to measurement of 2D fluence with high spatial resolution of the scanners.
